WordCamp Europe 2018 – tips and tricks to get you on a stage

  • 374 speaking applications from 216 people for 52 slots
  • Six ways to make a speaker application shine
  • WordCamp Europe will take place in Belgrade 14-16 June 2018

WordCamp Europe is the largest WordPress event in Europe, bringing all local communities together. 216 people around the world applied to speak at WCEU 2018, submitting a total of 374 abstracts. After a detailed selection process, 52 applications were successful.

What makes a good speaker application?

    1. Attention to detail. One of the very first things that makes an application stand out in a negative way is a lack of attention to things like spelling, capitalization, and those other small details. Make sure to review it carefully.
    2. Share the right information. Give organizers a good overview of your session structure: talk about what points you plan to cover, why this content is important, how technical you expect the session to get, and what the expected audience is.
    3. Structure. Don’t over complicate the introduction. Bullet points are a great way to highlight the most important  takeaways in your presentation and use your conclusion to WOW us, and unleash all your creativity.
    4. Make it relevant.
    5. Avoid sales pitches.
    6. Highlight your strengths. What makes you the best person to give this talk?

This year, the organising team narrowed down the 374 applications to the following:

  • 23 x full-length talks
  • 9 x lightning talks
  • 8 x 3-hour workshops
  • 8 x 90-minute workshops
  • 3 x 60-minute workshops

The first step was through a Blind Voting Committee, who reviewed and voted on all of the sessions in their area of expertise. They were only able to see session data, as the speaker-specific data was hidden. From there, the WCEU content team reviewed all applications for quality, experience and location.

Here is the final  the lineup of our speakers and sessions at WCEU 2018, and with only a handful of WordCamp Europe tickets left, grab yours while you can!
